Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is the most common cause of knee pain in the outpatient setting. In fact, PFPS accounts for 25-30% of all knee pathologies treated. Unfortunately, the etiology of this particular condition is poorly understood, and is one of the most difficult clinical challenges in rehabilitative medicine. As such, two common approaches for patellofemoral joint rehabilitation exist-one that focuses on quadriceps strengthening and another that focuses on hip strengthening. A Review of Common Interventions for Patellofemoral Joint Dysfunction: A Biomechanical Approach details a biomechanical rationale for both quadriceps and hip strengthening interventions.
